What is/are the best discoveries you made about your target language in the past year?

I love discovering cultural and historical facts of the language I’m learning.

Lately, since I learn Chinese, I discovered some very interesting topics that are part of Chinese culture and history:

  1. 女书 – the women’s secret language born in XIX century
  2. Empress CiXi story – the concubine who became empress during the Qing dynasty

What is/are the best discoveries you made about your target language in the past year?

Not in the past year but I clearly remember being very surprised to learn that Chinese Pinyin was only invented in the 1950’s! It’s not that old
