What does your language learning folder look like?

I’ve gone through phases with language learning apps - a love hate relationship almost!

I try to cut screen time as much as possible but I also find it super useful to study with apps when commuting.

However, I have filtered down my apps over the years to some favourites. Here is my folder.

How does yours look?

I only lean on Flexi Classes and use TalkAI, an app to help me practice speaking with AI. I haven’t focused much on writing and reading, but I think it’s time to put more effort into this. Any recommendations on apps that I can learn Chinese reading/Chinese character?

For Chinese characters:

Skritter || good for practicing writing with your finger on the screen.

Du Chinese || Lots of short Chinese stories for all levels.

Both can be used free before moving to subscription models. I’ve always had a good experience with these apps.

For me, LingQ is a must. It allows you to turn any material online or real books into graded readers. It can also pull scripts from YouTube and Netflix and use their audio to learn.

With any language learning, the more input you get, the better you will understand in the long run. So reading and listening really help internalize grammar and Vocabulary.

I did try LingQ, but I never stuck with it for whatever reason.

What are the best features about it and why would you recommend it, Derek?

Oh this is really cool, I didn’t know LingQ did that. I’ve never tried it before but now I might give it a go!

I have a pic of the folder, but also what is in the Kajabi app. It’s more like an LMS. Traverse is like Anki, and I use it along with the courses in Kajabi. I also use Yoyo Chinese, but there is no app for that. Oh, and Umi is Japanese.

Nice mix, like to see Skritter in there. I’m also a fan despite not having it in my folder currently.

I’ve never heard of this before! Are you finding it more effective than Anki?

I’ve never used Anki, so can’t compare. The decks I use with Traverse come from Mandarin Blueprint, the course I’m using in Kajabi. I just add cards as I go along, sometimes add pictures to the cards.
