After living in China for 16 years, I still need this graphic…
The word I need is 嫂子/sao3zi. Thanks.
Easy to remember as it has the same sound as 扫 which fits to her.
It does not make a difference whether it is my older brother’s wife or my husband’s older brother’s wife?
So 我丈夫的哥哥的妻子 can only be shortened to 我丈夫的嫂子. Right?
Here the explanation in Mandarin
我老公的哥哥的妻子
我称之为嫂子/嫂嫂
我妻子的哥哥的妻子
我也称之为嫂子/嫂嫂
若有排行,加上排行即可,如二嫂(也可不加)
And in English: Yes you can can call your husband’s/wife’s older brother’s wife also 嫂子。You can add an 二,三,四等 in front of it two differentiate her from any other 嫂子 you might have.
Such a helpful infographic, I need to save this in my phone! Every time I learn extended family members in Chinese, I end up forgetting them again a few months later
This family tree why so many new words hahaha
I think I’m pretty good when it comes to the close family, but then we have the cousins, aunts/uncles and it becomes more difficult!
As complicated as Vietnamese family tree. I prefer english family tree better
I second this
when it comes to a family gathering, do young people have to greet all family members one by one? In Vietnam, that should take you some time to greet 15 family members and relatives but I usually choose “Hello everyone” instead and get a frown time after time
