Summer and Language Learning

Hey language Learners!

Summer is here, and my question is: do you usually set your target language aside for summer or do you try to practice?

On my side, in summer I prefer to switch off BUT I always try to listen to podcasts in my target language as a form of “passive training”.

我不歇,一直学习。天天向上!

Seconded! There’s no time quite like the present.

I just urgently need a break from fixed appointments and from “presenting” myself in the working world.
I don’t need a break from studying, concentrating…on the contrary, finally time for pleasurable, dissolute reading and learning. 3 weeks in Italy. I’ll chat everyone up, :it:haha, and then quietly alternate with Chinese on the beach.Or maybe I’ll meet some French people, because we’re close to the border in Italy…

I started quite well, taking a lot of Korean lessons but I’ve recently moved house and now I’m completely out of sync.

Summer is definitely the hardest time to learn a language!

I know we all have opinions about Duolingo but today I’ve reach a 45 days streak and I’m just really happy i get some consistency in learning something again

Great effort! All positive steps should be celebrated.

Brava Marine

I actually have the opposite feeling…
I learned a Chinese sentence on Duolingo and used it to talk to Flexi teachers. Immediately, they corrected me. Not just one teacher, but several teachers corrected me on that sentence. This made me start to doubt what Duolingo was teaching me, and I eventually stopped using it.

Recently, a Flexi student sent me some links discussing the Chinese content on Duolingo, which once again confirmed my doubts.

that’s really interesting! Was it for Chinese language?

I am using Duolingo for Spanish only at the moment for vocabulary and introduction to the grammar, then practice with a friend what I learned outside and never had any comment about the phrases being wrong (so far)

Yes, that was for Chinese. I think for some languages, Duolingo has good content, but some are not very fully developed.

For Vietnamese, I wonder if Duolingo can teach students pronouns, as pronouns in Vietnamese are complex. Most foreigners just use “Tôi” to talk, but actually, in Vietnamese, we rarely use “Tôi.” We use different pronouns depending on the age of the person we are talking to.

Anyone who is studying Vietnamese on Duolingo, please share your experience here.

I’m all about keeping it light too. Podcasts are a great idea I usually mix in some music or watch shows in my target language. It keeps me in the loop without feeling like I’m studying.

This is also the way. Keeps you relaxed and calm. No need to add pressure or stress if there isn’t any.

September is almost here! Are you guys getting back to your pre-summer language learning habits or are you planning in developing new habits?

For me, as soon as September starts, I’m very much motivated to start Chinese lessons again! It’s something I’ve been saying for while and never get it done, but this time I’m sure I’ll do it!
