Stinky tofu or Durian?

After trying Durian in Vietnam in June, when I moved to Taipei in September my only goal was… try stinky tofu!

I know there’re 2 versions, the fried one and the boiled one (for strong stomachs only apparently). I tried the fried one and, even though the taste wasn’t that strong, I still think it’s not worth the smell :joy:

Have you ever tried sticky tofu or durian? Which one do you prefer?

I haven’t tried any of them! I just can’t go past the smell, maybe one day! :muscle:

Dislike both, but I think I dislike stinky tofu more!

I’m a fan of durian. Perhaps we’ve had durian a lot, so for us, that smell is okay. I have never tried stinky tofu, but I’ve heard that it is very smelly, so I am hesitant to try it.

Durian is not bad and for example in cakes or ice cream can actually be pretty good, as long as it is not the full flavour.

Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐) is just horrible. It tastes even worse than it smells

I only know Durian and it tastes and smells like stinky socks. I never eat again even they give it to me free :face_vomiting:
From other side, durian is a fruit but tofu …

Did anyone change their mind since we last talk about this?

I have to say I’m not opposed to a durian pizza! (Although I would say I only ate it because I couldn’t read Chinese at the time and thought it was potato…)

Haha, reading your comment just made me burst out laughing. I never knew that foreigners think durians smell like stinky socks.

I remember when I first ate durians, I had to cover my nose, but after several times, I got used to that strong smell.
Have you ever tried something you didn’t like for the first time but started accepting it from the second time?

Or did you eat it to wind up your Italian colleagues

Either way I’m pretty sure it worked :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

the shock you must have had when you bit into the pizza and realised it was NOT potato :skull:

Actually once durian is cooked it basically loses its taste and smell - or maybe it was just overpowered by the cheese… but I only found out it was Durian after I finished it, there was no way I’d have willingly eaten it otherwise :eyes:

I’d go with sticky tofu.

9 years in Taipei and still no attempts to try Durian, such a shame I live with but I guess I’d take stinky tofu anyday!
Being a vegetarian the options for protein are quite limited, so stinky tofu all day everyday. It actually is quite nice, especially that spicy (yet not that spicy) sauce that goes with it makes it 10 times better.

Stinky Tofu 臭豆腐 is unbearable.
At least Durian can be used in baking and cooking as an ingredient and actually taste nice.

臭豆腐 is just horrible. It tastes almost as bad as it smells.
