If you’re in Korea or planning a trip soon, knowing some basic Korean for restaurants can make your dining experience smoother and even more fun. Whether you’re at a BBQ joint, a cozy noodle spot, or a fancy café, here are some essential Korean words and phrases you’ll want to remember:
BASIC VOCABULARY
음식 (eumsik) food
메뉴 (menyu) menu
물 (mul) water
밥 (bap) rice (often means “meal” in general!)
반찬 (banchan) side dishes
고기 (gogi) meat
계산 (gyesan) bill/payment
USEFUL PHRASES
Ordering food
이거 하나 주세요. (Igeo hana juseyo) Please give me one of this.
메뉴 좀 볼 수 있을까요? (Menyu jom bol su isseulkkayo?) Can I see the menu, please?
추천해 주세요. (Chucheonhae juseyo) Please recommend something.
Special requests
덜/더 맵게 해 주세요. (Deol/Deo maepge hae juseyo) Please make it less/more spicy.
포장해 주세요. (Pojanghae juseyo) Please wrap it to go.
물 좀 주세요. (Mul jom juseyo) Please give me some water.
After the meal
잘 먹었습니다! (Jal meogeotseumnida!) Thank you for the meal! (Polite and commonly said when you’re done eating)
계산이요. (Gyesaniyo) The bill, please.
Tips:
Many places give free water and side dishes! Just ask if you need more!
Some restaurants use bells at the table to call staff. Otherwise, you can say “저기요!” (Jeogiyo!) politely to get their attention.
