How hard is it to learn Spanish?

I am almost done with the A1 lessons on Flexi Classes (:tada:), and was wondering how hard it is to learn Spanish, like how many hours more would I need in order to reach a conversational level.

I discovered that according to the Foreign Service Institute, Spanish is one of the easiest language to learn for English speakers, being placed in category 1 along with French and Dutch.

It says that for category 1 languages, it requires 600-750 class hours to reach a B2/C1 level.

I did the math and if I study 4 hours a week it would take me around 3.5 years to reach C1 level.

If you study 10 hours a week then it would be less than 1.5 years.

It seems too good to be true! Do you think it is really possible?

This article goes more in depth in the research:

I do think so, at least in Peru comparatively we take 3 years to learn English and only 1.5 years if it is intensive (more hours per week).
The good thing about Spanish is that RAE(Royal Spanish Academy) exists, so anything that is correct or accepted in Spanish language you can confirm with that academy.

Curious to see your progress after 6 months and one year! Including Spanish TV shows and some native conversation practice will definitely speed up the process too!

I already added a few shows in my Netflix list!

I gave up on watching la casa de papel as I am now officially bored of the story after a few seasons, but I started watching Narcos which is half in Spanish half in English, so it is a good start

That is a very good point! I know reaching fluency will take a while, but I would be happy just to be able to have basic conversations with native speakers, maybe in a year or two

If you’re looking for great Spanish shows to watch on Netflix, I watched this one a couple of months ago and I loved it. It’s called “Las de la última fila”, I found it very touching :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: and you’r going to learn a lot of Spanish slang as well!
