I’ve been learning Mandarin recently and realized that saying goodbye in Chinese is more interesting than simply learning one translation for “goodbye.”
The most common expression is 再见 (zàijiàn) , which literally means “see you again” and is probably the first phrase most beginners learn. But there are several other expressions that are useful in everyday conversations.
For example:
拜拜 (bàibài) — “bye-bye,” informal and commonly used in casual situations.
回头见 (huítóu jiàn) — roughly “see you later,” often used when you expect to see the person again.
一会儿见 (yíhuìr jiàn) — “see you in a little while.”
明天见 (míngtiān jiàn) — “see you tomorrow.”
For beginners, I think starting with 再见 and then adding a few informal alternatives is a much easier way to build usable Mandarin vocabulary.
