Google map reviews, youtube videos and asking friends or local friends who live or have been to the travel destination has worked for me. You can ask hotel/hostel managers and staff about their local recommendations…but sometimes they will suggest tourist places anyway.
And honestly, walking down the street and checking out places that give me good vibes, haha. This has worked well for cafes in Vietnam.

Even now being in Seoul, I still enjoy those videos like X number of dishes you have to try in Seoul.
