This week I’ve been studying the days of the week in Japanese and have found the naming system really interesting. First off, if you’re not familiar with the days of the week in Japanese, here they are:
Then when you delve into the meaning of names - things get interesting!
The names of the days in Japanese are based on natural elements and planets/objects in our solar system and actually have some crossover with the English naming system 
- 月曜日 (げつようび) - Monday
- 月 = Moon
- “Getsuyoubi” means “Moon Day.”
It’s the first day of the week, just like in English where “Monday” comes from the Moon.
- 火曜日 (かようび) - Tuesday
- 火 = Fire
- “Kayoubi” means “Fire Day,” and it’s named after Mars, the planet associated with
- 水曜日 (すいようび) - Wednesday
- 水 = Water
- “Suiyoubi” means “Water Day,”
named after Mercury (interesting name given that Mercury is closest to the sun!)
- 木曜日 (もくようび) - Thursday
- 木 = Wood
- “Mokuyoubi” means “Wood Day,”
and it’s associated with Jupiter.
- 金曜日 (きんようび) - Friday
- 金 = Gold, Metal
- “Kinyoubi” means “Gold Day,” named after Venus
- 土曜日 (どようび) - Saturday
- 土 = Earth
- “Doyoubi” means “Earth Day,” associated with Saturn
- 日曜日 (にちようび) - Sunday
- 日 = Sun
- “Nichiyoubi” means “Sun Day.”
