Chinese Numbers 1-10 & Finger Counting Differences 🤙🏼

Hi everyone!

I’ve been learning Chinese, and one of the first things I picked up was how to count from 1 to 10. I found it pretty easy to remember the numbers themselves, but what really threw me off at first was the finger counting system.

In Italy, we usually count by raising fingers one by one, but in China, they use one hand to represent numbers up to 10 with specific gestures. For example, 6 is shown with a “hang loose” :call_me_hand: shape, and 10 is often represented as a fist :fist:.

It took me a while to get used to, but now I always do the 6 like this :call_me_hand:t3:—even when I’m speaking Italian!

Have you come across different ways of counting on fingers in other languages?

P.S. If you want to learn more about numbers in Chinese, here we have a very complete guide :point_right:t3: https://ltl-taiwan.com/chinese-numbers/

NUMBERS IN CHINESE

I am always counting in Chinese with my hands. Even in Europe when people seem to have no idea what I mean.
It is just the much easier and faster system. I think Everyone should use it

Same! But for the Chinese hand counting I always get confused with 10 because some people have told me to make a fist and some people have told me to create a cross (basically like 十) with both index fingers

Yea this is me

Me too actually

are these represent the characters or they just came up with this finger counting systems?

That’s a good question! I’m not very sure, but I think they should resemble the way the characters are written. But maybe someone here can help us find the right answer!
