So I’ve been studying Mandarin for a bit now, and lately I keep hearing people talk about Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hokkien, all these other dialects. It got me thinking are they actually worth learning?
Like, I get that Mandarin is the “main” language and super useful pretty much everywhere, but dialects seem to have so much local flavor and culture behind them.
Has anyone here tried learning a Chinese dialect? Did it actually help you connect with people or the culture more? Or do you think it’s better to just go all in on Mandarin first?
